Not sure what  to expect

  • Arriving at class?

Arrive at class about 10 minutes before the start, if you can. In your first lesson I will need you to fill out a short form and just have a little chat about you, any injuries or limitations that you might have.

When you arrive take your shoes and socks off before walking into the space. Choose a mat - they are probably already laid out. Take a seat then allow yourself to take these few minutes before class to get yourself settled into the space, relax and fully arrive before practice starts.

  • What should I wear?

Wear something comfortable that allows you to move freely. You don’t need anything special. If your top is very baggy it might ride up when you are folding forward, or you might feel slightly suffocated or distracted by it.

I suggest a couple of light layers, as we warm up you can remove them and then as we slow down into stillness and relaxation you can put them back on so you don’t feel cold.

  • Can I wear socks?

Ideally yoga should be practiced in bare feet, but there are no ‘rules’. You can’t feel the mat as well when wearing normal socks and they can be slippery so there is more chance of accident or injury. If you suffer with cold feet you may like to have some socks for the beginning and end of class or invest in a pair of special yoga socks.

  • Do I need a mat or props?

I have yoga mats and props. If you become a regular practitioner you may wish to have your own mat, it will become your space. This will also allow you the option of developing your own home practice.

If we need props for a specific posture I will make sure I have enough for the number of students.

  • Why do you give adjustments?

Everyone’s yoga practice is as unique as the body you inhabit. I want you to find ease in your yoga practice so don’t feel discouraged if I offer you an adjustment. This doesn’t mean you are doing it ‘wrong’, it just means I can see a way you might be able to access the posture that’s right for your body. If a posture doesn’t feel right please let me know so I can find an appropriate modification.

  • What to eat before yoga?

Life is busy, I understand trying to fit everything in can be tricky. Try not to have a large meal in the 2-3 hours before class, when you are moving into inversions where your head is below your hips, or twisting through your center you may feel uncomfortable. Equally, don’t starve yourself before class as its hard to focus when your belly is rumbling.
